Hechlingen, June 2001-Excercises
Hi. My name is Manfred and I am your instructor. Follow me!
Part of Hechlingen training no matter whether you do the 2 day or 3 day session is spent at a Army/Tank training ground doing MSF style excercises. These are bike control excercises and include braking, turning, quick steering, and balance drills.
Even though you do these things thousands of time each time you ride I always find it interesting to challenge my limits and do these exercises seriously. Hey, even drills like this can be fun. Movies in MPEG format can be downloaded from the bottom of the page.

Photo - Braking Test, start
I love this exercise. Run full speed down into a box of cones and hit the
brakes.
We alternate between front only, rear only, and both. I could do this all day.
Photo - Braking Test, stop
Here I'm focusing on looking ahead (straight where I want to go so that I don't
get off balance).
Then being loose and balanced on the bike and having my weight shift slightly
back to offset
my forward motion and increase braking effectiveness. Posture and composure is
everything!
Photo - Start, wheelie
The exercises done in a group sometimes cause waiting times so in-between when I
ride back to
the starting point and for fun (the instructors who know me well by now get a
kick out of it) I
always try to start of with a wheelie and carry it as far out of the starting
box as I can.
Photo - Morning Exercises
Every day we do some light calisthenics to loose up our joint, limbs, and
muscles.
Photo - Steering drills
In addition to the braking exercises we do a bunch of steering, balance, and
emergency avoidance excercises.
All of this is done on the tank base and involves lots of pylons. This is
typical MSF stuff but is always good to refresh.
Photo - Slow riding
Here I am entering a 'slow riding' zone where we 'race' against another
rider/bike.
Always fun to see how slow you can go without stalling.
